East Melbourne Uncovered: Classic Beauty, Contemporary Lifestyle
Hiding in a world of its own between the Melbourne skyline and the hip city-fringe suburbs of Fitzroy, Collingwood and Richmond, East Melbourne holds onto its heritage while claiming ownership of its leafy boutique parks. A neighbourhood with history woven into its streets. Once home to some of the city’s earliest settlers and grand Victorian mansions, it has long been one of Melbourne’s most sought-after areas. Sure, it carries an air of old wealth, but it’s also a place anyone can wander through—strolling from Richmond to the city, taking in the tree-lined streets, historic buildings, and the beauty of Fitzroy Gardens along the way.
Several years ago, I was lucky enough to have a midmorning moment to myself and witnessed East Melbourne on a glorious spring day—the kind Melbourne is famous for as the city shakes off winter. The flowers were in full bloom, more vibrant than I had imagined, and I was struck by how unique the suburb truly is. It’s small in size but rich in character, with Victorian-era architecture that stands as a testament to a time when craftsmanship was an art. With that thought in mind I set my little Lumix camera to art mode and clicked away, trying to capture the charm of the moment. Below are some of these photos that day.
